Pre-arrival Information for International

Students on Short-Term Study Visa

  • Short-Term Study Visa: This visa allows you to study in the UK for up to 6 months (or 11 months if you’re studying an English language course). It does not permit you to work or extend your stay beyond the visa duration.
  • Visa Conditions: You must leave the UK when your visa expires and cannot switch to another visa while in the UK. Make sure to keep all important documents, including your visa approval letter and acceptance letter from Imperial College of Excellence, safely with you during travel.

  • Private Rentals: Many students choose to rent a room in a shared apartment or house. Websites such as Rightmove, Zoopla, and SpareRoom can help you find listings. Typical costs range from £800 to £1200 per month, depending on location.
  • Student Accommodation Providers: Companies like Unite Students, IQ Student Accommodation, and Student.com offer furnished rooms designed for students. These often include utilities and amenities like internet.
  • Temporary Accommodation: If you need somewhere to stay upon arrival while you arrange long-term accommodation, you may consider hostels, budget hotels, or short-term rentals through sites like Airbnb.

Tip: It’s advisable to arrange accommodation before your arrival, as availability can be limited.

  • Healthcare: Short-term study visa students do not pay the Immigration Health Surcharge and are only entitled to limited NHS services. Therefore, it is essential to have private health insurance for the duration of your stay.
  • Emergencies: In case of an emergency, call 999 for ambulance, police, or fire services.
  • GP Registration: You may be able to register with a local GP (General Practitioner) for non-urgent health advice, though some services may require payment.

Opening a bank account in the UK can be challenging for short-term students. However:

  • International Bank Account: Consider using a bank that allows international accounts, such as HSBC or Barclays.
  • Alternative Solutions: Digital banks like Revolut, Monzo, and Starling Bank are popular and can be set up more quickly, often with just an ID and UK address.
  • Currency and ATMs: The UK currency is the British Pound (GBP). ATMs are widely available, though some may charge a fee for withdrawals. Be mindful of international transaction fees if using a non-UK bank card.

  • Public Transport: The UK has an extensive public transport network, including buses, trains, and underground services in major cities. Consider purchasing an Oyster Card in London or other regional transport passes to save on fares.
  • Discounts: International students on short-term study can often benefit from student travel discounts. A 16-25 Railcard offers 1/3 off rail travel and can be used with student ID or proof of age.
  • Cycling: Many cities have bike-sharing schemes, and cycling can be a cost-effective and healthy way to get around.

  • Cultural Adaptation: It’s normal to experience some culture shock. The UK is a diverse and multicultural society, but adjusting to a new environment can take time. Be open to new experiences, and don’t hesitate to ask for help.
  • Student Support Services: Imperial College of Excellence offers support services to help students adjust to life in the UK. Our team can assist with academic and personal issues and connect you with local resources.
  • Social Opportunities: Engaging with local activities, clubs, or college-organized events can help you make friends and build a support network. The more you explore, the more comfortable you’ll become.
  • Emergency Contact Information: Make sure to keep a list of important contacts, including the college, local embassy, and local emergency contacts.
  • Staying Safe: The UK is generally safe, but it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas or at night. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash and keep valuable items secure.
